PTA Positions

  • The advocacy committee promotes advocacy on behalf of children and family engagement. They are nonpartisan and will not engage in any activities that could jeopardize the PTA’s 501(c)(3) status. The committee communicates with local members regarding NC PTA activities and legislative goals, hosts guest speakers on advocacy issues, and hosts the food drive. The chair attends board meetings and ensures that PTA events and programs are in accordance with the PTA mission. 


    • Time Commitment: 1-2 hours/month

    • When: Yearlong, Spring (Food Drive)

    • Where: Virtual, In-person, Powell (Food drive)

    • Time of day: At your convenience 

  • The audit committee reviews the PTA’s finances monthly and yearly, as well as whenever a financial officer leaves office. Individuals with authorization to execute financial transactions, and their family members may not serve on the audit committee, nor may the outgoing or incoming treasurer. Chair attends PTA board meetings and ensures that PTA events and programs are in accordance with the PTA mission. 


    • Time Commitment: 15 mins/month, 1-2 hours for annual review

    • When: Yearlong, July/August (annual review)

    • Where: Virtual (monthly reviews), Virtual/In-person (annual review)

    • Time of day: At your convenience

  • Maintains PTA’s main sign-up genius for PTA run events and needs. Creates sign up for playdates, follows up with playdate hosts, and works with the Communication Committee to advertise those events. Maintains the family directory. Checks in and provides assistance to Art Mob, Communications, Health & Wellness, Pawlooza, and Welcome & Engagement Events. Attends PTA board meetings and ensures that PTA events and programs are in accordance with the PTA mission.

  • Item descriptionThroughout the year, the nominating committee is tasked with identifying talented, motivated, and responsible individuals to serve as officers the following year. Prior to the last general membership meeting of each fiscal year, the nominating committee shall prepare a slate of nominees for officers for the coming year. Chair attends PTA board meetings and ensures that PTA events and programs are in accordance with the PTA mission.

  • Facilitates the PTA Teacher Grant application and communicates necessary information to both the PTA board and applicants. Maintains PTA’s main sign-up genius for school run events and needs. May assist with the 5th grade moving up ceremony. Checks in with and provides assistance to the following committees: Cultural Arts, Room Parents, Hospitality, Yard Mob, and Yearbook. Attends PTA board meetings and ensures that PTA events and programs are in accordance with the PTA mission.

PTA Committees

  • Reading has a clear and studied benefit for our kids! The PTA hosts a Scholastic book fair in the fall and spring, with the proceeds benefiting our media center. Last year we were able provide almost 300 NEW BOOKS for our media center!

  • This committee maintains the PTA website and social media presence, as well as sending the PTA newsletters.

  • The Cultural Arts Committee organizes the Reflections art contest as well as arranging for visiting artists and writers to come to Powell for assemblies and residencies.

  • The Health & Wellness Committee hosts Walk & Roll to School Day in the fall and Bike to School Day in the spring.

  • This committee shows appreciation for our staff by organizing teacher lunches, celebrating staff appreciation days throughout the year, and planning Teacher Appreciation Week activities.

  • Palooza is our Spring Carnival, with inflatables, face painting, food, and more. There is also a silent auction. The Palooza Committee plans and executes the event and auction.

  • This is our big fundraiser of the year. Students skip/run/jog around the field in the fall to raise money for the school.

  • Coordinate with our shirt vendor for Powell Spirit wear. Our Spirit Wear store opens up a few times a year so that students and families can purchase Powell gear.

  • Local businesses host Spirit Nights for us throughout the year, where a percentage of purchases goes back to the PTA.

  • This committee plans events like Popsicles on the Playground, Tea & Tissues, and hosts a PTA table at back-to-school events.

  • This committee helps make sure that Powell’s campus is looking its best. The yard mob hosts campus cleanup and beautification days throughout the school year.

  • The yearbook committee plans and puts together the school yearbook, as well as managing sales and yearbook distribution. A Yearbook Ice Cream Social is hosted by the Yearbook Committee in the spring.
